Behind the Beat: Q&A with Rasta Tahj of Tri-City

Behind+the+Beat%3A+Q%26A+with+Rasta+Tahj+of+Tri-City

KP: How did you get your start?

“ It actually started as a hobby playing around in my basement  in  D.C., and recording my own stuff on my laptop. We then recorded “Me And My Bros” around the time we all came to N.C. A&T three years ago. When we created that song we made a video to go with it and a lot of people listened to it. It went off from there.”

KP: How would you describe your sound?

“ I would define our sound as being independent. When people listen to our music, they usually can’t reference it to anyone else, not even D.C. The D.C. sound is way different from what we sound like, and I think that will help us change the game. We just talk about real stuff that we know and are dealing with and you can hear it in the music. We tell stories through our music.”

KP: What was the inspiration behind your latest single?

“ We made this song based on a conversation we had about getting out of our area. There is a high crime rate where we are from, so we asked what do we have to be to let people know we are different? What do we have to be to be different from the average kid from our area?”

KP: What is next for your music?

“ We all have our own singles we are working on. Controvery 2 is our second mixtape we are working on. I am also working on my own EP. We are really just focusing on perfecting our craft this year.”
