Aggies Take Two Wins

North Carolina A&T State volleyball team sailed past Savannah State in a three set win (25-23, 19, 16) Friday.

Brooke Stamnes has acquired 966 career kills after putting together her second consecutive strong match with 17 kills.

Stamnes only needs 34 kills to become just the second player in school history to reach 1,000 kills.

Teammate Ashley Johnson surpassed 1,500 digs, as she went on to record 19 in the match. Johnson is the only player in NCAT history to exceed 1,500 digs in a career.

The Lady Tigers (0- 29, 0-8 MEAC) scored the first two points of the first set for a 2-0 lead, but the Aggies (6-11, 4-3 MEAC) tied the set at two by scoring the next two points. SSU scored the next five points for a 7-2 lead, but N.C. A&T outscored SSU 14-9 to tie the set at 16.

After a kill from the Aggies, to tie the set at 17 and force a timeout from Savannah State, the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to lead 20-17.

However two Tiger attack errors and a kill from sophomore.

Alyssa Pitt tied the set at 22. A block assist from Pitt and Jasmine Lindor gave the Aggies their first lead of the set. N.C. A&T outscored SSU 8-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take an early 1-0 lead.

With the second frame tied at four, the Aggies scored the next three points to lead 7-4 and extended its lead by outscoring SSU 10-4 to capture a 17-8 lead.

The Lady Tigers quickly scored the next four points to close within five points, 17- 12,but the Lady Aggies outscored SSU 8-7 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

NCAT scored the first six points of the final stanza for a 6-0 lead and outscored SSU 19-16 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match. Sophomore Samara Brown contributed with 12 kills and Lindor added seven kills on only eight attempts to earn a .750 hitting percentage. While junior Liz Martino added 28 assists.

The Aggies are firmly in third place in the MEAC southern division as it tries to earn one of the top four spots out of the south. The Tigers (0-29, 0-8 MEAC) lost to N.C. A&T for the 11th straight time.

The Aggies picked up a win over Savannah State on Friday with a four-set win (25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) then successfully defeated S.C. State Sunday afternoon at Dukes Gymnasium.

The Lady Aggies improved to 7-11 overall and 5-3 in the MEAC. Senior Brooke Stamnes finished Sunday with 18 kills, 10 digs and a .350 hitting percentage.

She also had 10 digs, which gives her 27 double-doubles for her career.

Senior Ashley Johnson added 16 digs and senior Aleena McDaniel had six kills, only one attack error and a .357 hitting percentage. Junior setter Liz Martino had 40 assists against the Bulldogs (3-18, 3-6 MEAC).

The Aggies won the first set behind the strength of sophomore Samara Brown. The Aggies set her 10 times and she responded by slamming down seven kills in the first set.

Alyssa Pitt and Jasmin Lindor combined for 11 block assist on Sunday. Pitt also added nine kills on a .412 hitting percentage. Brown, finished with a season-high 15 kills and seven digs.

N.C. A&T had a chance for a sweep, tying the match at 23 on a Bulldog attack error. A kill by Brianna Dafney and an attack error from the Aggies kept SCSU in the match.

The Lady Aggies stayed away from mistakes in the fourth set, committing only two attack errors.

Stamnes did not commit one as she closed out the match with four kills in the fourth.

Stamnes’ kill gave the Aggies a 21-16 lead. Dafney tried to keep SCSU in the set with a kill to close to within three points but the Aggies scored three straight to secure the win.

The 2015 MEAC Volleyball Championship Tournament will be held Nov. 20-22 in Princess Anne, Md.

The Aggies close out the regular season at home with the top two teams in the MEAC southern division in Bethune-Cookman on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., and Florida A&M on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 3 p.m.
