When you think Los Angeles, big city glitz, movie stars and Disneyland come to mind. But the area also has much to offer when it comes to hitting the high seas.
Served by the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro and the Port of Long Beach, the Los Angeles area offers a multitude of opportunities to visit ports near and far. Two major airports offer plenty of opportunities to find cheap flights to Los Angeles, so you may find that chartering your cruise out of this city is your most economical option. Hop on a travel site like Travelocity to find the best deals on the following adventures:
Santa Catalina Island: Not necessarily a cruise destination, Santa Catalina Island offers adventure and a nearby respite from the bustle of L.A. Commonly referred to simply as Catalina, the island is only 22 miles from Los Angeles and takes about an hour to reach by ferry. Its major port of Avalon offers small town charm mixed with big city entertainment. The rest of the island is wild and offers myriad hiking, camping and boating adventures. Many cruise lines also offer options that stop at the island on the way to destinations further afield.
Mexican Riviera: The west coast of Mexico is only a short trip south from Los Angeles, offering travelers the opportunity to see many of Mexico’s beach destinations over the course of a cruise. Take a short trip around the Baja Peninsula and visit Cabo San Lucas, or travel as far south as Acapulco. Take advantage of deals offered in the colder months before spring break when children are still in school.
Hawaii: Boarding a cruise ship to Hawaii from Los Angeles will allow you to have some time at sea before hopping between islands to see what our 50th state has to offer. Visit the coffee plantations of Kona for some of the freshest java you’ll ever taste or coast down the famed Haleakala volcanic crater on a bike. As you can imagine, there is no shortage of opportunities to soak up the sun on the beach.
Disney cruises: Just because you are leaving Disneyland behind, it doesn’t mean you can’t bring Snow White and Captain Hook along. Disney cruises travel to many of the popular destinations from Los Angeles and offer entertainment options for all ages.
