The highly anticipated Aggie Fest Greek Step Show took place on April 15, with many surprises and special guests.
Shawn “Quiet” Ray and DeMar Rankin, with Mike “Mike Philly” Fairfax of A&T’s radio station serving as the DJ, hosted the event. Old-school classics like “Push It”, “The Electric Slide” and “The Cha-Cha Slide” played on the sound system and got the crowd involved.
The first of two special appearances was by Splash Entertainment Inc. recording artist Lil’ Peedy. A Charlotte native, Lil’ Peedy performed some tracks from his upcoming album.
The first organization that performed was Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.Through their routine, they showed the audience that even though they had the least amount of performers, they were able to bring competition.
Last year’s sorority winner, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. performed based off the classic movie “Harlem Nights” as their theme. Performing a selected scene from the movie, the organization had the audience cheering and in laughter as they performed various routines.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., used the classic movie “The Five Heartbeats” as their theme. Acting out various songs from the movie, such as “I Got Nothing But Love,” they left the stage with a standing ovation.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. derived their theme from the movie “Mission Impossible.” Their mission was to rescue Justin Ramey, a member of the fraternity and the 2005-2006 SGA President. During a brief intermission, a request was made for each fraternity to perform their party hops for the crowd. The audience enjoyed . Last year’s fraternity winner, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. performed using styles from the Black Panther Party as their theme. They drew much attention as they marched onto the stage protest-style.Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. performed next with “Girl Fight” as their theme. As apart of their routine they used “good girl” versus the “ghetto girl” image.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was next to perform, as one member acted to be Usher for their theme. At the end, they had the audience in awe as they included children in their act. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was the last organization to perform as the used the “Cafe Takeover” as their theme. In the stands, you could see the members of the sorority waving green lights to show their support.
Atlanta-based rap group Crime Mob, the second special guest of the evening, performed a few singles off their debut album, including the hits “Knuck If You Buck” and “Stilettos and Pumps.” Towards the end, the announcement of the winners got underway. For the sororities: fourth runner-up was Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; third runner-up was Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; second runner-up was Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and the winner was Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
“We worked very hard, but most of all, we worked as a team…we did our best and will continue to do our best throughout this journey,” said Tara Wilson, a spring 2005 initiate of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on Feb. 13, 1932 at A&T.
Fourth runner-up for the fraternities was Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; third runner-up was Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; second runner-up was Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and the winner was Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Joshua Canzater, a spring 2004 initiate and step master of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. explains how the whole idea came together.”God blessed me with some ideas and put them in my head…I was able to put it together right quick,” said Canzater.
