After tallying all the votes from the March 23 election, the results are in. Although a close race, junior business marketing major, Anisah Rasheed, took the title of Miss North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.
For Rasheed, the news of her new title was exceptionally good.
“It hasn’t set in yet, but I’m definitely excited,” said Rasheed.
Campus and community involvement did not just begin for Rasheed. She has been a very active citizen for most of her life. Since beginning school at A&T, Rasheed has served as Miss Freshman, sophomore class president, secretary of the Council of President, and a member of the Ladies of Excellence, just to name a few.
“When I got to A&T, I knew I wanted be a leader, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I didn’t know if I wanted to be president, if I wanted to be Miss A&T or what, but I did know I wanted to be something,” said Rasheed.
Inspiration to become Miss A&T goes back to Rasheed’s year as Miss Freshman. While she was on court with 2003’s Miss A&T, Jocelyn Jacobs, Rasheed said she saw how much of an impact Jacobs had on other people’s lives.
“It really made me want to be Miss A&T,” said Rasheed.Rasheed’s campaign was not full of glitz and irrelevant activities. Instead, she allowed her personality and humbleness carry her to the winners circle.
“I basically went through the dorms and made sure people could put a face to my name. People saw how humble I was and that I was a genuine person and I think that goes a long way,” she said.
Rasheed said that the campaign proved to be an intense battle due to everyone’s credentials.
“All of the girls were highly qualified for the position,” said Rasheed.Junior graphic communications systems major, Thaddaeus Lamb agreed with Rasheed.
“It was an extremely tough competition and I am very proud of her win,” said Lamb.
In preparation for next year, Rasheed and the new SGA executive board are scheduled to meet in the near future to start getting to know each other and plan their schedules. Rasheed plans to start working extremely hard over the summer.
“I’ve already started making connections as far as who I need to speak with and know to get each of my programs done. Over the summer I want to start putting things in place so that next year, it won’t be so much of a hassle,” said Rasheed.
The new Miss A&T’s platform consists of four programs. The four programs are: “The Melting Pot”, “Aggie Enterprise Conference”, “I Conquer!” and “I Conquer Too!” In addition to how to venture into the world as entrepreneurs and leaders, the programs focus on learning about each others differences.
Rasheed’s programs relate close to home because she is also an entrepreneur. By the age of 14, Rasheed became the CEO and president of “Sister Clowns,” a clown entertainment business for children.
She has been featured in Black Enterprise, Black Enterprise Teenpreneur Magazine, Essence, Working Women and Finders Keepers. She made appearances on “The Ananda Lewis Show, “The John Walsh Talk Show” and “The Today Show.” She was also named in the Essence Book “50 of the Most Inspiring African Americans.”
“That was definitely one of my highest accomplishments,” Rasheed said.Rasheed has Lamb’s support. He thinks that she was the right person for the Miss A&T position.
“I feel she is more than qualified for the position and will represent the school well in all aspects,” said Lamb.
