Starring Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher, and Zoe Saldana, “Guess Who” is overflowing with laughter and romance. The romantic comedy is a spin-off of the 1967 classic, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” with Sidney Poitier.
This film is about Simon Green (Kutcher) and Theresa (Saldana), who have an interracial relationship and are planning to an engagement. Simon is a rising stockbroker who has good credit and is feeling good about meeting his girlfriend’s father, Mr. Jones (Bernie Mac). Jones, an executive of loans at the local bank, decides to pull Simon’s credit report and is impressed to see that it’s perfect. Jones immediately assumes that that Simon is black.
Unfortunately, the day Simon was to meet Theresa’s father, he is forced to quit his job. Simon’s boss made racial slurs to him about his relationship to Theresa, and now Simon is anxious and doesn’t want to meet Theresa’s dad. Theresa doesn’t want to delay and feels Ashton is ready. Unfortunately for Simon, Theresa’s father does not respond well to him at all.
Throughout the movie, Jones finds himself following his gut about Simon and becomes more and more convinced that Simon is hiding something. As to be expected, Jones finds out about Simon’s recent job mishap and tells his daughter. The climatic topper is whether the two will get back together and if so, how and will Daddy Dearest have anything to do with it.
The movie treads lightly on the original, but creates its own unique flavor for today’s modern viewers. “Guess Who” may not get any points for its well-thought out plots, but its definitely entertaining.
