The Aggie baseball team continued their weekend dominant play by sweeping Savannah State in a tripleheader series Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday they won 12-5, after snatching the doubleheader 11-4 and 14-2.The three wins improved A&T to 11-26 on the season and dropped SSU to 23-19.During Sunday’s action, Marquis Riley and Nick Rogers combined for 4-9 with 10 RBIs to aid the Aggie in closing out the series.
Rogers connected on a two-run homer in the third inning, before Riley cracked a three-run shot in the seventh.
A&T was only up 5-4 through six innings before their scoring-frenzy seventh inning. The Aggies scored a total of six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning increasing the margin 11-4, and the Tigers were only able to scored one more run before A&T’s victory. This effective hitting on Sunday also occurred during Saturday’s doubleheader, as A&T maintained the momentum throughout the series.
Early in the first game, SSU showed signs of a competitive series, but made mental mistakes and bad defense to take them out of the contest, and eventually the series. With the game tied at four, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, George Hines’ single made way for Xavier Macklin’s two run homer that gave the Aggie a two-point advantage.
The Tigers then threw a pitch over C.J. Beatty’s head that caused a bit of a stir on the SSU sideline and resulted in two players and a coach ejection.Once the commotion on the field settled down, the Aggie offense erupted again. Beatty hit a double to left field, Rogers was walked, and Jaron Neal scored Beatty on a sacrifice fly.Â
Cyril Daniel eventually closed the inning on a single to increase their lead 8-4. The eighth inning consisted of a two-run triple by Macklin and sacrifice fly by Beatty that gave the Aggie their final runs of the game.
The second game was simply all A&T.Â
The Aggie had four players — Hines, Macklin, Riley and Rogers — hit home runs, and recorded 14 hits and 13 runs through three innings.Â
Hines, Rogers, Macklin and Riley also had three hits apiece while Hines and Rogers had three and four RBIs respectively.
