Only one week after losing homecoming to Morgan State, the A&T football team traveled to Washington, D.C. to play Howard for their homecoming on Oct. 22.
Howard’s running back Keon Coleman rushed for 162 yards on 28 carries to give the Bison a 16-0 win was the Bison’s first conference win of the season over the Aggies on October 22.
“We just weren’t consistent enough to be able to take advantage of the opportunities to score,” A&T head coach George Small said. “The defense did play well enough to win, special teams played good as well.”
With 9:54 left in the second quarter, Howard was the first to get on the scoreboard. Bison quarterback, Darrell Turner, threw a 31 yard pass to Jarahn Williams for the score.
Just four minutes after Howard’s first score, the Bison scored once again when Turner used his running back skills for a one yard touchdown. Aggie defensive back Brandon Colbert showed his strength on special teams blocking the ensuing extra point attempt.
A&T got the football, but, Orrick Watkins threw a costly interception on the second play of the possession. Howard took over on their 42.
The Aggie defense forced Howard to punt on their sixth play of the drive. The Aggies could not capitalize on this successful stop by the defense before the half.
Once again, the Aggie defense tried to give some momentum to their offense forcing a fumble in the fourth quarter. Defensive back, Wilbert Johnson, picked it up for a gain of 31 yards.
The offense could not capitalize on Johnson’s big play and fumbled on their third play.
Linebacker, Chamar Milton, led the Aggie defense with 13 tackles, and had an astounding 78 tackles for the season going into the Oct. 29 match-up against conference rival Bethune-Cookman. Defensive Lineman Rickie Lewis contributed with three sacks.
Watkins had 11 completions on 21 attempts for 103 yards. Wide reciever Brandon Trusty hauled in five receptions for 37 yards. The Bison defense shut down the Aggies holding them to negative five rushing yards.
Going into the game against Bethune Cookman, Small was hopeful of an Aggie win.
“(Bethune-Cookman) has a very good offense as well as a defense, and the type of offense they run, you have to be very disciplined, and sound on defense in able to control their offense,” Small said. “We are going to have to play more consistent football going into this particular game.”
