Alpha Lambda Delta Freshmen Honor Society was named student organization of the year at the 2014 GALA Awards.
The GALA Awards is a recognition ceremony to celebrate N.C. A&T students, organizations, faculty, staff, and community members who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, service, and leadership.
“This is absolutely outstanding,” said Sandrea Williamson, assistant director of A&T’s Honors Program and advisor to Alpha Lambda Delta. “Our students worked hard, and they deserve the recognition.”
A committee of students, faculty, and staff throughout the university selected the award winners.
Zachary Price, Alpha Lambda Delta’s A&T chapter president, received the Dorothy J. Harris exemplary leadership award.
“I didn’t know much about the award. It was a pleasant surprise,” the civil engineering sophomore said.
Under Price’s leadership, the organization created three new $500 scholarships to active members of Alpha Lambda Delta.
“Zach has indeed been an exemplary president,” Williamson said.
The freshmen honor society also hosted programs to enhance study skills and academic success for A&T students and inducted 290 freshmen this spring.
While the members have been very active on campus, they have also been active in the Greensboro community.
The students volunteered with the Black Child Development Institute, mentoring and tutoring children and also helped Alpha Lambda Delta’s UNC-Greensboro chapter with its induction ceremony. On the global scale, the A&T chapter donated $1,000 to Closefield School in Mankessim, Ghana.
The national organization of Alpha Lambda Delta celebrated its 90th anniversary this year.
