Snowmobiles are fun and entertaining machines to play with in the snow – and in some parts of the country, have become a necessary means for transportation. But they also can pose danger to riders and drivers – especially teens and children.
One in five snowmobile-related hospital emergency visits in the United States involved children, according to the Marshfield Clinic. So if you have young children, it’s in your best interests to keep these snowmobile safety tips in mind:
* Snowmobiles require body strength to maneuver around snowdrifts and hills. Younger children may not be strong enough to wrestle the snowmobile around, and shouldn’t drive without having an experienced adult on board. Passengers also need a lot of strength to hold on for long periods of time over bumps and turns. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no one younger than 16 drive a snowmobile.
* Beginning drivers should likely stick to groomed trails, and only drive during the day. They also should pair up with an experienced (adult) driver who is familiar with the territory.
* Snowmobiles are not built for towing sleds, tubes or skiers on a rope or chain. Turning a corner or hitting bumps at high speeds can easily throw and injure the rider.
* Always have drivers and riders wear a snowmobile safety helmet, with eye protection. Kids also should wear helmets that fit them well. All riders should wear heavy winter-weather gear to stay warm.
* Have all children take a snowmobile safety course, and repeat the course as each winter rolls around to keep the safety material fresh in their minds. Also review the equipment, emergency kit and first aid kit with your children, to better provide them with knowledge of how to survive if they get lost or crash while out on a sled.
* Maintain a slower speed when children are on the machines. That way, if the sled hits a bump or bounces off a snow drift, they will be less likely to lose their grip and fall off or have the snowmobile roll over on them.
* As a parent, always demonstrate solid snowmobile riding practices to provide your children with an example of good driving practices.
Snowmobile riding is making a comeback in popularity as many states are receiving better snow coverage during the winter months. Trails are expanding, and families are taking a greater interest in an activity they can do together. But before your family heads out on the trail, make sure you review safety tips to help keep everyone safe while on the sleds.
