Chicago definitely has its list of traveler’s greatest hits: Michigan Avenue, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier and Wrigley Field. They make up a great first-timer’s itinerary, but for those who love Chicago and return multiple times, the city offers plenty more to see and do, once you’ve checked those items off.
Chicago travel has something to offer to foodies, culture vultures, sports fanatics and more. If your travel companions like to sample a bit of everything, so much the better – there are few cities in America quite as diverse as Chicago, in terms of sights, tastes and cultures. And because cheap flights to Chicago are readily available (arriving at either O’Hare or Midway), it might be the perfect place for your next family getaway.
Consider adding these five sights to your Chicago experience.
1. The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. Strolling through the gorgeous grounds of the University of Chicago is a lovely experience in itself, but tucked away in a beautiful Gothic revival building is this fascinating tribute to Near and Middle East archaeology. Objects on display date from as far back as 10,000 B.C. and include everything from household goods like toys and jewelry to elaborate decorations that once adorned monumental buildings.
2. International Museum of Surgical Science. You don’t need to be a doctor (or play one on TV) to enjoy this wild and occasionally weird museum that chronicles the history of surgery. The museum has more than 7,000 items from around the world that show just how far we’ve come in this medical field. After a visit here, you’ll be thankful when you go to the doctor and remember that barbers often used to do double duty, picking up the amputation saw after putting down the scissors.
3. Robie House. When is a house more than a home? When it’s a building that revolutionizes American architecture. That’s just what the Robie House, built by Frank Lloyd Wright, did; its long, straight lines were inspired by the visual lines of the Midwest landscape, and came to be known as Prairie style architecture. It was also a watershed moment that opened the doors toward modern architecture. Take a tour and marvel at the quality of the craftsmanship that was at the center of Wright’s approach to architecture.
4. Chicago French Market. If you’re a Francophile or just in need of a tasty bite for lunch, this extensive downtown marketplace is a great place to stop in. Vendors sell all manner of food and drinks of French origin – and though it’s often high-brow food, prices are quite affordable. Don’t miss the tasty pommes frites with a side of mayonnaise.
5. Primitive. Part museum, part shopping – but a one-of-a-kind experience. This four-floor gallery is a great place to explore traditional ethnic art from around the globe, with museum-quality examples everywhere you look – and if the price is right for you, you can take it home. If you’re lucky, you’ll be invited into the Buddha room, filled with priceless (literally) Buddhist artifacts, including an elaborate silver altar.
