The Aggies sent off seniors Aundia Gray and Avignon Williams in style with a 3-0 win (25-18, 22, 27-25) against Garner-Webb on Tuesday. The last game of the season was also the last game of the four-year careers of Williams, who became the Aggies’ all-time leader in blocks, and Gray, who ended hers with a monstrous block.
On top of breaking the all-time record for blocks, Williams added 7 kills on the night. Gray added 6 kills, Tiffany Mellette contributed 12 kills, 4 service aces, and 7 digs, and Janae Mitchell produced 9 kills and 7 digs. Coach Lyndsay Schmeidel said that she would like to see the Aggies take the momentum that began to pick up at the end of this season at the beginning of next season. “We played well at the end, and that is the biggest thing that I want the team to take from this season to the next.
We can’t wait until the end’ we have to play like this from day one.” Aundia Gray reflected on her career at A&T, saying that the first game of her career was the best part of it. “It was more exciting to me than any other game. I was a freshman starter and my adrenaline was pumping that day. I was just ready to play. She also gave her advice to Aggie teams in the future, emphasizing the importance of team bonding. “That is the most important thing when it comes to team chemistry. Also, you can never succeed with a bad attitude.” Avignon Williams recalled the MEAC championship game her freshman year as her best moment. “That was a great experience, especially in my freshman year, because it made us see what it takes to get there.” She offered some advice to future Aggie teams, pertaining to off-court team chemistry. “I would advise them to get along and stay close off the court, because it has a direct impact on what happens on the court.” This season has been rough for the Aggies, who ended 7-22 overall and 2-6 in the MEAC. They have been in may close matches, but have consistently had trouble finishing in crunch time.
They finally got their first win of the season in the Alabama State Volleyball Tournament when they defeated Mississippi Valley State on September 13th. After a tough non-conference schedule, the Aggies entered the conference searching for confidence. They defeated Winston-Salem State in their first home game of the season and beat Bethune-Cookman to get their first conference win.
