No Ricky Lewis. No Lewis Kindle. The Aggies were pretty much out of Lewis options in their 29-13 loss to Coastal Carolina.
Freshman Kwashaun Quick started at quarterback for A&T due to Kindle’s one game suspension. Despite the freshman having three interceptions, he threw for 155 yards including a 23 yard touchdown pass to Larry Raper with less than two minutes in the first half to put the Aggies within seven points at halftime.
“I think he played like a freshman,” said head coach Rod Broadway. “I’m proud of him, but we can’t use his age as an excuse. He is a college football player like the rest of his teammates. We expected him to play better than he did.”
A&T star running back Mike Mayhew didn’t do much to benefit the Aggies with 11 carries and only 32 yards rushing.
On the other side of the ball, D’Vonte Grant and Travis Crosby combined for 26 tackles, but the A&T defense as a whole couldn’t manage to stop the 274 yards passing game of senior quarterback Aramis Hillary. Coastal wideouts, in particular Niccolo Mastromatteo who had seven catches for 114 yards, seemed to find every open hole that A&T’s secondary didn’t cover, giving Hillary an easy open target.
In the red zone, A&T cornerback D’Vonte Graham intercepted Hillary’s touchdown pass that gave the Aggies boost of confidence, but the excitement abruptly diminished as Quick was sacked in the Aggie end zone to give the Chanticleers two extra points for the safety.
The Aggies play their first home game of the season Saturday, Sept. 8 against West Virginia State at 6 p.m.
Kindle and Lewis are expected to play.
