A&T has spotlighted on values and skills that college students can apply to all aspects of their lives through the Honda Campus All-Star
Challenge Quiz Bowl Team.
Before the tournament began, juice and chocolate chip cookies were served. The grand prize was a $150 book voucher for each individual player of the winning team.
Dr. Rashid was the moderator. Overall, more than 30 people were in attendance. There were two types of questions: toss-ups and bonuses.
The teams could not work together on toss-ups, but they could on bonuses.
The pamphlet for the program stated that the HCASC is the premier academic competition among the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Sixty-four teams are invited to the National Championship Tournament (NCT) to compete for the national championship.
HCASC is a quiz-bowl style game where two teams of four players each answer questions pertaining to various subjects such as U.S. history, current events, sports, literature, fine arts, mythology, African-American history, geography and pop culture.
“The students are able to use their different backgrounds in their majors and compete against basic questions whether it is pop culture, African- American history, sciences, politics: any question could come up,” said
Nicole Florence, Associated Director for Programs for the Memorial Student Union and the Office for HCASC Program.
North Carolina A&T has participated in the program for the past 21 years and Honda the competition started 22 years ago.
“I’m excited because it is a battle of the minds and the purpose is to enhance the intellectual climate here at the campus. The winning team of all HBCU’s receives the $50,000 grant for their school. We are looking forward to winning,” said Florence.
The winner of the tournament was “Team Polo.” Each team seemingly answered as many questions as they could to the best of their abilities.
“I liked the competition and had a lot of fun,” said Jazmine Johnson, Memphis, Tenn., Math and computer science major. “This was my first time at the Honda-Campus Quiz bowl tournament, but not my first time in a quiz-bowl style competition.
“I truly enjoyed the quiz bowl competition,” said Mitchell Brown, business economics major, Fredericksburg, Va.
