Students, faculty, and staff gathered, Wednesday, in Williams Dining Hall for “Conductor Hour” as Student Government Association President, Dorian
Davis delivered the first state of the campus address.
Topics such as voting, student philanthropy, homecoming, academics, tuition increases, and new campus resources were discussed. Davis stated that the purpose of the campus address speech was to enlighten students on issues occurring around campus and to acknowledge that university leaders are strategically planning to ensure that their concerns are addressed appropriately.
Throughout his election, Davis used the platform, “Board the Aggie Train: Cultural Mobility for A&T.” It stands on five points: Philanthropy, Student Equality & Development, Financial Empowerment, Global Literacy and Community and Alumni Engagement.
Davis plans to impact the students and the university, tremendously. He plans to implement healthier food choices by encouraging the cafeteria’s food company, Sodexo, to utilize local farms and the Aggie farm when preparing meals for students.
“I feel that Dorian’s idea for healthier food choices is a great one. Coming to college, we are so busy with classes and other things that we forget to eat correctly. Giving us the choice to do so will make it a lot easier to eat the right foods,” said junior Brittany Foxx.Another initiative that Davis has initiated is, “I love my 1891.” This initiative calls for students to give back to the university. Davis stated that if each student were to donate $18.91 to the university it would make a significant difference. This goes into one of Davis’ five points, student philanthropy.
“I think it’s a very good initiative to get students involved to give back. It is often advocated for alumni donations. Although alumni donations are very important I think that it is very important for students that are currently enrolled in the university to give back because it shows school pride and care for their university,” said Student Government Association Parliamentarian, Tyler Harper.
“It feels amazing to have completed my first state of campus address speech. You always see where improvements can be made. The 2013-2014 academic SGA President, Canisha Turner was an amazing speaker. She inspired anybody to do better, to be a better speaker and to be eloquent and poised. I tried to channel a little bit of her today and I feel like I really did and still keeping to who I am as being, Dorian Davis,” Davis stated.
The Davis Administration plans to make an impact on the university and keep Aggie Pride alive at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
