    Christopher “Play” Martin

On his way to the Soul Music Festival in Raleigh, NC, Christopher “Play” Martin stopped by WNAA 90.1 Wednesday, August 26 to promote his new project, “Brand Newz,” and give away tickets to the festival.

The artist, who was one half of the rapping duo “Kid N’ Play,” thought the black community needed an outlet to share positive news. The organization, “Brand Newz,” is a media outlet that showcases positive news stories that are sent in from its viewers. Its website also features guest interviews from music artists of today.

Along with this project, Martin serves as a professor of Hip Hop and Context at North Carolina Central University, where he teaches the course with former “Little Brother” member 9th Wonder. While he teaches the course, he also tells his students that he does not think hip-hop is dead.

“I don’t think it [hip-hop] is dead, but I do think it is in a comatose state,” said the co-star of House Party. “There’s not a lot of creativity, innovation or the courage to fail. I’m not really a big hip-hop fan. Right now, I’m very into talk radio. And I like to keep is fresh with the 80s, 90s, and even some disco.”

He has admitted he is not a fan of anyone in particular, except Jesus Christ, although he does think Soulja Boy has potential.

“I do admire Kanye West because he does not care what people say, but no, I’m not a fan of anyone particular.”

Martin also shared that he thinks there is a time and season for everything and he and Christopher ‘Kid’ Reid believe it is time to pass the “mic”.

“I enjoy listening to other people who do it well,” he said.

As to whether Kid ‘N Play fans can expect another House Party movie or more music from the duo, Martin hinted at the possibility.  “There are talks” he said.
