Since the release of “Roar,” it’s been hard to keep Katy Perry off of the radar. From TV, radio, to magazines, Perry has been everywhere. Katy released “Dark House,” “Walking on Air,” and “Unconditionally” to give fans a glimpse of the “new Katy.”
From inspiring hits and party anthems, Perry never disappoints her fans. Her new album “Prism” proves exactly that. This is her first album since divorcing comedian Russell Brand. Perry’s new album positions her as an “adult artist.” The sound is darker and deeper. Like the shape, “Prism” is comprised of different colors and shapes.
Even though “Prism” doesn’t showcase much of Perry’s “Teenage Dream“ personality, “Prism” offers a mature sound. Unlike the idealistic love of “Teenage Dream,” Perry’s new single “Unconditionally” illustrates a realistic and consistent romance. Perry suggests her recent divorce in “Ghost.” In “Double Rainbow” and “By the Grace of God,” Perry discusses what she went through after her divorce and how she moved on to find herself and someone else.
The first half of “Prism” starts with an array of songs that fit the pop star’s hits that we love. From disco in “Walking on Air” to rap in “Dark Horse” to pop-rock in “International Smile.” The second half of the CD is the darker other side of Katy. She sings about her miserable relationship, the struggle of finding herself and how to move on.
“It takes two” shows a side of Perry that makes her relatable. She states that it “takes two sides to every story.” These songs are not like the summer hits of a “California Girl,” but they are something much deeper from an artist striving to tell her full story. “All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs,” said Perry.
“Roar” has over 3 million downloads. With her other single “Walking on Air” at 34 and “Dark Horse” at 57 and still moving up, the album is said to hit No.1 on the 200 Billboard by next week’s charts.
With many of hit singles under her belt, Perry has aspired to create an album that would have nothing but that. If you compare her past album with her new third album, you may see the lack “bubble gum candy” excitement that dominated “Teenage Dream.”
One thing for sure, her new album is a great listen.
