Over 1500 students traveled to the Exhibit Hall of the Memorial Student Union to vote for the 2005 Spring elections on March 23. Despite the cloudy and wet weather, candidates stood their ground to convince voters to mark their ballot in favor for them. Voting began at 8 a.m. and ended at 6 p.m. The winners were announced shortly after.In the end, the Student Government Association Executive Board came away with strong wins.
Justin Ramey, the new SGA president won by 127 votes. Chance Lynch came in a close second with a total of 608 votes. Cory Adams finished with 271 votes.
As president and chairperson of the executive branch, Ramey will head the executive board and committees except the Election Committee. He will develop a budget, attend to the Student Senate, appoint the Parliamentarian, and make several State-of-the-Campus addresses to the student body.
Outside of A&T’s campus, Ramey will serve as the representative for the university. He will be a member of the Board of Directors and any other university committee in which he is appointed.
The position of vice president of internal affairs was won by Arnita Moody with 1192 votes. 360 votes were tallied for Kirk Monroe. Moody will assist the president and perform his duties in the event of his absence. She will be the speaker of the Student Senate and in charge of forwarding all legislative acts to the president. Megan Brooks, with 724 votes, became the new vice president of external affairs.
She defeated Blake E. Johnson and Michael Fairfax who both ended with less than 500 votes.
Brooks will also assist the president. She will be responsible for the public relations of the SGA and for directing all research projects initiated. She will also be working with campus and community organizations in order to get the student body more involved in community affairs.
The new SGA secretary, Jessica Robinson won by 114 votes. Marissa Wilkes was her closest opponent. Robinson will be responsible for clerical duties and office management. She will be in charge of recording minutes at all SGA meetings and maintaining established office hours.
The winner of the treasurer position is Charles Biney. Biney received 778 out of the 1581 votes.
He will work with the president to distribute all monies appropriated by the Student Senate while maintaining an accurate accounting for it. His accounting report must be reported monthly to the entire SGA.
Biney must place his signature on all travel forms, purchase acquisitions, and other document pertaining to finance. The attorney general investigates and prosecutes those who disobey the SGA constitution. Dominique Tillman won this position with 570 of the 1562 votes.
Finally, Anisah Rasheed will be the 2005-2006 Miss A&T. She will serve as the official female representative for the student body. Rasheed received over 22 percent of the 1615 votes tallied for this position.All SGA executive board members, except the attorney general, aid in the implementation of events for Homecoming, Aggie Fest, and Black History Month.
The newly-elected officers released the following statment as a group:”The Ramey Administration is a dynamic as well as a diverse group of Aggies. We have taken on the task to be the most interactive and efficient individuals possible as representatives of ourselves as well as North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. Thus far, we have not officially taken the oath to our respective offices, but ideas of governance and programming have been initiated for the 2005-2006 academic school year.”
