Dexter, thank you for having the courage to speak up on behalf of the student body. I only wish the staff senate or members of the staff had the same kind of courage.
The difference is when we as staff voice an opinion or object to violation of a policy; it could literally mean our life. This may sound extreme but losing a job in this economy could lead to a loss of life. Our families are at stake, our mortgages and our lives. So trust me Dexter, we understand your sentiments.
Many of us are just afraid. Once master’s whip has torn the flesh on your back, it is hard to keep up the fight.
I agree with everything that you said about the conditions on campus; however you should know that the staff is treated even worse. Some members of the staff have filed grievances only to be harassed, isolated and eventually fired or forced to quit.
Staff members endure sexual harassment, file grievances and the perps are to give sexual harassment training that should be mandatory for all campus staff while the victims becomes the bad guy. Racism, sexism and classism rule at A&T.
There are concerns about gang violence being condoned because of a concert. There is a gang on campus called administration. The gang also extends outside of campus to former Aggies, attorneys, and General Administration. The gang members are the Vice Chancellors who sit high on their post swatting flies and trying to avoid doing the real work that it takes to run this institution. Instead, when a student fly or a staff fly comes by and buzzes them with a question or complaint, they meet in dark places and put together a fly swatter to catch or kill the fly. The lynch mob at A&T will track the fly down, pin its wings, blow smoke in its face and if it does not surrender; it will be fried. As African-Americans, we come to an HBCU with the expectation that of all things, we will not endure discrimination and harassment because of our heritage. Instead, what we find is a group of adminstrators who function like house negroes. Anytime employees or students are punished for speaking their truth or reminding administrators of their own rules, there is a problem. Did you know that during the sit-in movement that A&T celebrates, students who wanted to go downtown to support their fellow students were threatened with expulsion. The same University that erected statues to the A&T Four will not allow students to follow in their footsteps.Today, employees who go to HR to resolve a problem find themselves being accused of some offense later. Its is called keeping the lower class negroes in place. How dare a student or staff member point out something the University has done wrong? So Dexter, you are not alone in your frustration…we too are frustrated. Until staff members are willing to put it on the line like Dr. King, Jesse Jackson and our sit-in brothers, we are destined to hang by Willie’s famous Lynch.-Anonymous
