According to a university relations press release freshman Jawuan Paul Trotter died earlier this morning after becoming ill while attending the Union Takeover event in Exhibit Hall. Immediate action was taken by calling campus police and emergency services. After being transported to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital he later passed away.

The university sent students an announcement at 7:35 a.m. concerning the death of Trotter.

The Union Takeover was a mixer for the incoming students as part of Welcome Week.

According to students who attended the Union Takeover the event shut down around 1 a.m. after Trotter passed out. Authorities have not released the cause of death.

The university’s counseling services office will be open to students and employees tomorrow from 2 to 5 p.m. in Murphy Hall, Room 109.

Funeral services for Jawuan Paul Trotter will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Grove Baptist Church, 5910 W. Norfolk Rd., Portsmouth, VA 23703.
