Litter and lockouts result in fines to students

Residence halls are cracking down on policies due to the amount of lockouts and litter that occur daily.

Residents are responsible for their Aggie One card and the key to their room or suite.

It is not uncommon for students to lock themselves out accidently.

A residence life staff member may be needed in the event of a lockout and there is a policy that needs to be followed.

There is a two-week grace period at the beginning of each semester for students to become accustomed to carrying their keys around with them. During the grace period, no charges will be issued for lockouts.

After the grace period, a $15 fee is charged to the student’s account if he or she requires staff to assistance. For each lockout students are fined $15.

Pride Hall, one of the student dormitories, has been dealing with constant lockouts from the same students.

As a result posters regarding the lockout fee have been placed around Pride Hall.

Kourtlon Perkins, a sophomore sports science major from Raleigh, explained how he was locked out of his room and did not have $15 in cash at the time.

“When I got locked out I did not have $15 so I thought I was going to have to sleep outside.”

However, the lockout fee is charged to students’ accounts so they do not have to pay with cash immediately.

Another reason students get fined is for littering in the hallways.

This fine is not located in the policies, but to decrease the problem residence halls make students pay a fee.

Housing and residence life wants students to treat residence halls as if they are their homes.

To create a cleaner environment students have to work together to keep the Aggie community a clean place to be.
