What a beautiful disaster, “Beautiful Creatures” hit movies theaters last Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 and came in sixth at the box office over the weekend. Warner Bros studio grossed a disappointing $7,460,000 since the release date of its new movie, starring Alice Englert, Alden Ehrenreich, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, and Jeremy Irons. Writer- director, Richard LaGravenese’s movie was based off a young adult series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

The supernatural melodrama takes place in a small town South Carolina where two teenage misfits, Ethan Wate (Ehrenreich) and Lena Duchannes (Englert), are brought together by fate. Ethan is a 17-year-old boy who wants nothing more but to leave his Bible loving town to go to college and to meet a girl. Soon enough, a mysterious raven-haired girl named Lena enters into his class and has him in awe.

Rumors start to circulate about Lena and her family being Ravenwoods, members of a wealthy witchcraft clan, but that did not stop Ethan from pursuing her. The two find themselves falling in a forbidden love that will not be tolerated by Lena’s uncle, Macon (Irons).

The real drama surfaces as Lena anticipates her sixteenth birthday, where she expects to be claimed by the dark or light side of magic. As the fight between good and evil unveils, Lena and Ethan try to sustain their undying love for each other until the unimaginable happens.

“Beautiful Creatures” was a fun, paranormal romantic love story that critics called a southern fried “Twilight.” The chemistry between the two lead characters, Englert and Ehrenreich, was magical.

They shared a strong sense of love for one another that had viewers convinced. The down sides to this film were the bad southern accents, supernatural “not-so” special effects and the over the top get up.

I would give “Beautiful Creatures” a C.
