UPD Can Make Arrest on and off Campus

The authority and ability of officers from the University Police Department should not be questioned. Most students view the police department as a means of security, but UPD officers have the right to arrest students. “UPD officers all are sworn officers with all the abilities and responsibilities of any sworn officer in the state,” said Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Police and Public Safety, Thomas Youce. UPD officers offtentimes choose not to make arrests due to the atmosphere in the setting in which they serve. “Allowing the university to handle matters versus the courts handling the matter results in punishment enforced more swiftly and effectively,” said Younce. For this reason, UPD often leaves disciplinary jurisdiction to the university. With the responsibility of ensuring safety and protection in an academic environment, UPD has to take certain measures to contribute to and maintain a positive learning atmosphere. In addition to the laws local enforcement adheres to, UPD also subscribes to legislature unique to college campuses. As a specialized branch of the Greensboro Police Department, UPD undergoes more extensive training to satisfy the needs of their demographic. University Relations is announcing the new police chief on Sept. 1.
