Fruitvale Station Review

Fruitvale station was written and directed by Ryan Coogler, and produced by Forest Whitaker. It may be Coogler’s first feature length film, but he soared at the box office. Fruitvale Station is currently at the $15 million mark.

Fruitvale Station is a must see movie that will leave vewers speechless and emotional. The film is based off of a true story, a young man named Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan). Oscar, was a 22 year old African American male, lived in Oakland, Ca. The film shows insight on Oscars last day alive, his interactions with friends, family as well as strangers. Additionally, the film goes through Oscar’s flashbacks, struggles and new personal goals that he wants to achieve. Unfortunately, the racial profiling tragedy that he will face later on in the day determined his fate. Oscar and friends were violated at Fruitvale Train Station by two B.A.R.T. (Bay Area Rapid Transit) police officers. The movie portrayed racial profiling accurately. The white officers only searched black men who appeared to be “thugs” without witnessing what really happened. No fairness or investigative process had taken place. They chose who they arrested merely by assumption and went on a rampage from there. There were many witnesses that recorded the horrific encounter between Oscar, his friends, and the police officers. What is interesting about this case is that Oscar was face down on the ground in handcuffs, struggling, and he was shot in the back by a trained police officer. Similar to the Trayvon Martin case, in both situations two males of the minority were both unarmed and both killed. I think the director intended to convey the awareness of racial profiling and that this traumatic incident could happen to anyone.

I grade this movie an A. It is very interesting from the beginning to the end. It is not difficult to understand. There were not any humorous scenes, although, it had a very serious tone. It did not take long for the plot to occur because the movie was approximately an hour.  Michael B. Jordan, did a phenomenal job. This is  a movie that deserves support from the masses.
