‘Carrie’ remake: Is it a winner or waste?

“Carrie”, a remake of the 1976 horror movie, may or may not have upheld its standards in the box office this past weekend. Horror remakes have proven themselves time and time again to be rather tricky and problematic to execute.

“Carrie”, is not only an Oscar nominated film and acclaimed novel by Stephen King, but one of the horror genre’s greatest achievements. The film is about a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother. She unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Carrie, who is played by Chloe Grace Moretz, experiences trouble controlling her telekinesis powers. Carrie is kind hearted, her rage will cause bad things to happen to anyone around her.

Chloe Grace Moretz sells the mysticism of her powers and the frightening dialogue with her mother Julianne Moore who also delivers an unforgettable performance as a religious extremist.

The story revolves around bullying. Seeing that bullying is an issue in today’s society, one would think that filmmakers would have put more emphasis on the consequences of bullying. Instead, viewers become witnesses of a film that says bullying is not right, but doesn’t do anything about it.

Chloe Grace Moretz brought enough fury in this film that it made up for the lack of consequences that did not occur. The audience loved watching the vengeance just as much as Carrie enjoys executing it.

The only real issue is that the film is not available in 3D. With all the blood and the phenomenal special effects that display Carrie’s telekinesis powers, no 3D version is available. After viewers enjoy all of the chaos Carrie caused, viewers are awkwardly shown a rushed and easily misinterpreted ending that left viewers in their seats as the credits rolled.

While “Carrie” is far from a masterpiece, it is a great film with great acting. The acting in this film is so well executed that it is able to capture what makes the first film so special. If you know nothing about the first film, this sequel will come across as fresh and spectacular.
