The Student Government Association postponed their 2011-12

freshmen and vacant slot elections from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 due to a

The Student Government Association postponed their 2011-12 freshmen and vacant slot elections from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 due to a technical issue. All of the votes that were submitted on Aug. 31 were discarded and replaced by the Sept. 1 votes.

Ryan Marcus an economics major and winner for senate District No. 2 School of Business and Economics says, “The postponed date may be confusing to voters because even like our flyers… and stuff it says the 31st and so some people are going to be like elections were yesterday so you’ll have a lot of undecided voters.”

The technical glitch that canceled the election process was due to a slight misinterpretation about the company we were using according to Lee Morgan, associate director of student development. He says that the error was not one made by A&T but by a third party company Votenet.

Votenet is an online voting service that says they have more than 24,287 online ballots and [has served] over 14,730,474 voters worldwide.  There were no glitches in the Votenet system in the spring online election.

Candidates continued to campaign outside of the Memorial Student Union on Sept. 1.

Derrick Fields was outside of the Memorial Student Union helping his friend campaign and says that, “If it affects his campaign any I think it’s going to be in a positive way because they saw his face yesterday and we persuaded a couple more people to vote for him.”

Alexis Wooten, a freshman, exercised her right to vote and says,“I just felt like it was still important because I don’t want this process to be prolonged because I know a lot of these candidates like really want it… so I thought I’d come out her and do my part.”

Morgan believes A&T will continue its online voting and says that, “Technology can go downhill anytime but I think it’s very secure as far as being safe and accuracy and really reporting out the number of voters and things of that nature when it comes to actually casting a vote.”
