Homecoming comedy show surpasses expectations

North Carolina A&T turns Corbett Sports Center into a comedy club once again for the 2012 Homecoming Comedy Show.

North Carolina A&T turns Corbett Sports Center into a comedy club once again for the 2012 Homecoming Comedy Show. After months of research and preparation, an all star cast of comedians including Bruce Bruce, Red Grant, host Tone X and headliner Deray Davis attracted many students, alumni, faculty and staff for an evening of laughs. “Im excited because we sold way more tickets than we were projected to sell” says Bryan Keller, senior marketing major and SUAB president.

Keller says his role in making sure the comedy show was a successful event was doing the research. He paid attention to public opinion of certain comedians on twitter and watched certain comedians on youtube in order to determine who would be the best fit for A&T.  Laké Buggs, A&T’s executive director of student activities, says her job included supervising SUAB and SGA from the beginning stages of planning the comedy show to the end of the show.  Buggs, along with Diamond Life Concerts president Tony Williams performed tasks such as reviewing contract agreements from performers, keeping track of ticket sales, and accommodating the performers once they made it into town.

Once the show started, host Tone X hit the stage and immediately informed the audience that he loved A&T and never missed a homecoming when he was younger. After showing love to the university and feeding the audience a few jokes, he introduced Red Grant. Red started his set by telling comedic stories of his past and then asking for crowd participation in conducting a opera of whoo’s, ayee’s and yeah’s. Next up was Bruce Bruce who made the crowd belt out in continuous laughter with “you know you fat” jokes and making fun of audience members. Last but not least was Deray Davis who made that crowd laugh so long he had to be cued to wrap it up.  All of the comedians delivered a successful set, potent with original jokes.

This was Tone X’s fourth time at A&T and he says “I ask to come to A&T every year because of the great energy and it’s always a good time.” Tone X has been a comedian for 18 years and often tweets his punchlines and can be followed @tonexcomedy.

Deray Davis was off to Dallas,Texas after he left the show but before he left he spoke of how the energy at A&T was “dope.” He explained how it was different to perform for a college crowd versus his usual crowd of middle aged people. “College students want the jokes at a faster rate which allows me to really show off my comedic craft” said Davis.

Lamar Watford, Junior architectural engineering major said his favorite comedian of the evening was Deray Davis and thought the show was over all very interesting and hilarious. “There was a different variety of original jokes” says Watford.

The show was thoroughly planned from the kind of music to be played before the show all the way to clean up at the end. Measuring by the amount of people constantly laughing, it was an overall success.
