North Carolina A&T secured a narrow 71–70 victory over Hampton University at the NBA HBCU Classic in Los Angeles. The matchup, part of the NBA HBCU Classic, highlighted more than just a close finish; it underscored the growing national stage for historically Black colleges and universities.
Since its debut in 2021, the event has served as a platform to showcase HBCU talent, tradition, and competitiveness, with this year’s game continuing that mission as North Carolina A&T and Hampton delivered a tightly contested, nationally televised rivalry game. The Aggies won in a closely contested game that went down to the very end. They showed patience and control against a well-known opponent while putting up a memorable performance on one of college basketball’s most prominent HBCU venues.
They demonstrated the outstanding skill, confidence, and strategy that characterize HBCU athletics today, demonstrating that the Blue and Gold perform best on the biggest platform. The Aggies didn’t just compete, they showcased the elite talent that defines HBCU athletics today.
In addition to the victory, North Carolina A&T State University received $100,000 in funding to support academic resources, athletics and other future university investments. This funding increase highlights the HBCU Classic’s dual goals of increasing program awareness and supplying the material resources required to develop the next generation of athletes and scholars. For A&T, this means better facilities and improved tutoring programs.
Entering the game against Hampton the Aggies were on a four game losing streak and were 2-10 in the conference placing them 12th in the CAA. The Aggies also lost to Hampton in their previous matchup in January.
By winning the game on the big stage they proved that they can handle high pressure moments. With the CAA tournament approaching every conference win matters as the Aggies fight for a higher seed. Now that the Aggies have split even with Hampton they now have the slight advantage if they meet Hampton again in the post season.
The season’s trajectory has been forever altered by the emergence of freshman Lewis Walker. In addition to his 18 points, Walker has played a huge role in the teams success as he has been the top scorer for the past 7 games and was even named CAA Rookie of the Week after the game against Hampton.
When asked what contributed most to the win, North Carolina A&T guard Bryson Ogletree said, “Keeping the energy high and never doubting what we have going on.” That exact energy was crucial in erasing a late game deficit. This victory is proof of concept for a young squad with a brilliant freshman like Walker in control.
So how does the HBCU Classic win truly impact the season? For the Aggies, it is the momentum shifter. This victory gave a young team something more meaningful than the national attention and $100,000 investment.
By snapping a four- game losing streak the Aggies demonstrated that they had what it takes to succeed under pressure. When the game was on the line they showed that they could rely on freshman Lewis Walker. The Aggies are beginning to play with the confidence of a team that knows it can win anywhere, against anyone, as the CAA tournament approaches.
