In the newest housing updates from N.C. A&T; microfridges will be removed from residential housing.
The news came as quite a shock to current students.
A microwave and mini fridge combination was previously provided to students as a part of their housing costs. Typically, it was to be shared by room or suitemates for convenient heating and cooling of foods, snacks and other necessities such as medication and skincare.
The announcement was posted on N.C A&T housing instagram page.
The post, along with other housing updates explained as of August 2026, students are no longer provided with a fridge and microwave. Listed were two options, students are to bring their own unit under the size and wattage requirements, or rent one from the university’s partner, campus resources llc.
The renting partner adds specializations such as N.C. A&T wrapping to microfridges. Some students wonder if such add ons are needed or another way to get money out of students.
In lieu of rising tuition costs and housing dilemmas many students wonder why this change was made and if the students best interest was at heart in this decision?
Zion Parker is a sophomore biology pre-med scholar and student advocate who is not afraid for his voice to be heard.
“Behind every policy is a student whose life will be affected by it. If we are truly committed to student success, then our policies must reflect the realities students face and remove barriers rather than create new ones for those already working tirelessly to build a better future” Parker said.
While the right to a fridge wasn’t stripped completely and these obstacles can be overcome, students are now tasked with yet another step and charge to have a basic necessity in residential housing. Another step may discourage students from getting a unit all together.
These barriers may be extra strenuous for students that utilize lifesaving medications such as diabetes injectables and liquid antibiotics that require refrigeration.
Aggies with severe food allergies use the fridge and microwaves to store their own foods so they don’t have to worry about cross contamination upon meal time.
Lastly, those with physical disabilities benefited from the already provided units because it was easily accessible to store food without making a hustle to get meals.
Online comment sections across Instagram and Tiktok platforms have riled up students and alumni.
Alumni remarks that fridges and microwaves were not previously provided in their undergraduate years and that this comes as “no surprise”. On the other end, students and recent grads exclaim that with rising tuition costs and little transparency about why the change was made, provides frustration.
Students question if the university is still in possession of the microfridges, why then market them off to a 3rd party company?

“What hurts the most is the high cost and hassle of renting one if needed. Especially being that all in state students are getting a 3% tuition increase due to the UNC board of governors. Where is the money going that we were being charged for them before” Taylor remarks.
Student government leaders have assured students they will further investigate the removal and advocate for students’ concerns upon arrival in the fall semester.
