N.C. A&T received a $63 million donation from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott, the largest single gift in the school’s history.
The contribution comes five years after her initial $45 million gift, bringing her total support for the university to $108 million.
Officials say the investment reflects scores of continued confidence in A&T’s growth and national standing as a top research-driven HBCU.
“This is not about short-term gains, it’s about the long-term growth of an amazing institution,” Chancellor James R. Martin said in a video posted by WXII 12 News.
University leaders say the unrestricted gift will help advance priorities outlined in A&T’s “Preeminence 2030” strategic plan.
Preeminence 2030 is the university’s 12 year plan to transform through five core values: responsibility, excellence, integrity, inclusiveness and learning.
Funding will also support the university’s push toward achieving the Carnegie classification’s highest research designation, expand programs in engineering, agriculture, health science, data sciences and artificial intelligence, and strengthen student success initiatives.
Administrators note that the added resources positions A&T to take on larger research projects and broaden innovation across key disciplines.
A&T’s endowment is expected to exceed $300 million following the donation, increasing its capacity to attract top faculty, fund research, breakthroughs and widen opportunities for students.
The university has seen strong momentum in recent years, including record enrollment above 15,000 and more than $350 million in research awards since 2020.
Officials say Scott’s latest contribution will help sustain that growth and elevate A&T’s role as a leading public HBCU on the national stage.
“Her second gift to this university is a testament to what is possible,” said Martin in a video posted by the Greensboro News and Record.
