The latest issue of Khreative Magazine, the photography and mixed media editorial magazine by esoterikh, is officially out and features the top HBCU DJ in the nation, DJ Iso.
Senior journalism student Khari Obichere, also known as esoterikh, released the first issue of Khreative Magazine (also spelled خreative), in March of 2024. It featured street photography and excerpts of dialogue. Issues two and three feature content involving several other A&T creatives and students as models in unique photoshoots.
“With this one it’s different. It’s not just a collection of my work but an actual magazine,” Obichere said. “I realized having a lookbook or a photobook wasn’t going to help my growth, so now I carry out the functions of an actual editorial magazine.”
The third issue features more work from other contributors including photoshoots, articles, and a dedicated contributors page. This allows the magazine to serve as a hub for other creators to collaborate and express themselves.
Although print production didn’t start until March of this year, esoterikh was nearly finished with “Issue 00: Khreative” in April of 2023. The entire self-titled prologue was a personal release of thoughts and concepts showcasing a series of photoshoots and individual works. A collection of photos featured in the issue was shared on the esoterikh Instagram page.
“With different types of avenues or just facets of life, there’s a kind of rule that when you start, it’s going to be bad. I wanted to get that out the way so that it would be much different when I actually put time and thought into it,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I was nervous or excited. I don’t know how to describe what I was feeling. It was just, ‘I need to do it’. That’s what I felt.”
With the new issue being available for pickup on Sept. 25, there will be three total print editions of Khreative Magazine in circulation. While the number may not draw eyes on paper, producing the series while balancing the responsibilities of a student is not an easy task.
“[Khreative Magazine] is definitely going to be a business, but I’m fairly confident that as big as it will get on campus, it will probably have to come with me after I graduate,” Obichere said. “This either can go one of two ways. This can turn into a thing where it’s a long-standing tradition, where people come in and carry out the vision that I set, or it comes with me and or dies with me, and allows me to move on in my career.”
The print version of Khreative Magazine’s new third issue is now available for purchase on the magazine’s website, where the issue will also eventually be uploaded to the archive.
