The N.C. A&T Aggies overcame a 10 point deficit with less than a minute remaining in regulation to claim their first CAA win in history, utilizing freshman seventh-stream quarterback, Noah Sanders.
Fans emptied out the stands seeing no hope in sight, not realizing they would miss history being made in the Aggies first win under head coach Shawn Gibbs. For the past two seasons in the CAA, the largest public Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) could never step into the win column of conference play. That changed Saturday night, in Head Coach Shawn Gibbs’ first game in Truist Stadium.
The Aggies fought from behind the entire second half but a 41 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback, Noah Sanders who’s seventh on the Aggies depth chart. Coach Gibbs attributed the team’s success to their willingness to never give up.
“That’s just the culture we’re trying to build around here … never give up,” said Gibbs.
On the stat sheet, the CAA rivals were evenly matched; the Aggies had 180 rushing yards with senior running back Wesley Graves leading the charge with 94 yards of his own. Hampton’s senior quarterback Isaiah Freeman gave the Aggies trouble with 142 rushing yards of his own.
It’s no surprise Aggie fans left, their team’s offense stalled for the majority of the second half, recording -2 passing yards in the third quarter. The sixth stream quarterback checked out the game with an injury and the seventh stream quarterback only completed 35% of his passes in the second half.
No matter the difficulty, the Aggies refused to back down. Coach Gibbs believed the Aggies could’ve dominated but simply didn’t. The culture in Aggieland is shifting slowly but surely which was Coach’s plan all along.
“It’s easy to give up, not these guys … we’re winners and that’s what they have to realize those guys are winners, ” said Gibbs.
